Modern Slavery Statement

  1. Our structure

    1. London Marathon Foundation (the Foundation) is the trading name of The London Marathon Charitable Trust, a company limited by guarantee, company number 01550741 and a registered charity, number 283813.  The Foundation is one of the United Kingdom’s major charitable funders of initiatives to encourage people to take part in physical activity.  The Foundation aims to provide funding to enable people to become and remain physically active, and to challenge inequality of access to physical activity.
    2. The Foundation was established in 1981 alongside its trading subsidiary, London Marathon Events Limited (LME), a private limited company, company number 01528489.  The Foundation and LME have a shared vision of “Inspiring Activity”.  Both organisations were created with complementary aims:
      1. The London Marathon Foundation provides funding to enable all people to become and remain physically active; and
      2. London Marathon Events Limited works to grow and improve the mass-participation sporting events it organises and increase the amounts raised by participants for charities.
    3. Across the two organisations, together the London Marathon Group (LMG), we work in complementary ways to deliver the greatest possible impact in terms of our shared vision and values. The surplus from the London Marathon and other events organised by LME is corporate gift aided to The Foundation and we use these funds to award grants to projects which are in line with our core mission of promoting physical activity for all.
    4. The Foundation is the parent company and the sole shareholder of LME, which holds the majority of relationships with third-party providers with whom we engage to provide a range of services and goods to facilitate the delivery of our events and forming our supply chain.
    5. This Modern Slavery Statement covers LMG.
  2. Our policies on slavery and human trafficking

    1. We are committed to ensuring that there is no modern slavery or human trafficking in our supply chains or in any part of our business.
    2. Our Modern Slavery Statement demonstrates our commitment to acting ethically and with integrity in all our business relationships and to implementing and enforcing effective systems and controls to ensure slavery and human trafficking is not taking place anywhere in our supply chains.
    3. We also have policies in place to:
      1. Protect whistle blowers within the organisation;
      2. Protect the welfare of the Foundation and LME employees; and
      3. Ensure due diligence within our supply chain.
    4. As part of our initiative to identify and mitigate risk, we have in place systems to:
      1. Check that all employees directly engaged by the Foundation and LME have the right to work in the UK and are paid at least the National Living Wage/Minimum Wage as appropriate.
      2. Engage workers directly, where possible, to maintain control of employment practices:
        1. Modern Slavery training is included as part of our employee induction process, and we have minimum pass marks in place to ensure all new staff have awareness and know what tools are in place to assist with their supplier engagement.
    5. In order to ensure that all persons within our supply chain comply with our values and ethics; this Financial Year we have undertaken the following activities:
      1. Identified suppliers at high risk of Modern Slavery based on the goods or services provided and requested policy information (and audit documentation where appropriate) pertaining to their supply chain.
      2. Requested that high-risk suppliers enrol onto a collaborative ethical database (Sedex) providing supply chain transparency.
      3. Implemented a responsible procurement toolkit to support internal purchasers of goods and services and raise awareness of the importance of ethical considerations when engaging third party providers.
      4. Incorporated standards of practice into our LME supplier Terms and Conditions including obligations on labour standards and wages and benefits.
      5. Produced a supplier questionnaire for tender exercises incorporating questions regarding wages and benefits.
      6. Released our annual Environmental Reports ‘Leaving the Right Impression’. Whilst this reports primarily cover LME’s environmental performance, it also outlines responsible procurement as a target for success.
    6. In the next Financial Year we intend to:
      1. Roll out the supplier questionnaire, which is reviewed as an ongoing improvement exercise, for tender exercises as our procurement process matures;
      2. Increase supplier usage of the collaborative ethical database and request of supply chain audits;
      3. Continue making Modern Slavery awareness training compulsory for all staff.
    7. This statement is made pursuant to Section 54(1) of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and constitutes LMG’s updated Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement for the Financial Year ended 31 December 2022 and has been approved by the Directors of LME and the Trustees of the Foundation.
